Subject: Call for Contributions to Special Session on "Participation"
Importance: High

Dear colleagues,

The University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany is conducting a long-term
collaborative research program on "Sustainable Land Use and Rural
Development in Mountainous Regions of Southeast Asia" which is introduced as
"The Uplands Program" in the two target countries, Thailand and Vietnam. The
program has been established in cooperation with eight Thai and Vietnamese
universities and research organizations and the World Agroforestry Centre.
It is funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft) and co-funded by the National Research Council of
Thailand and the Ministry of Science and Technology, Vietnam.

We are currently preparing an International Symposium "Towards Sustainable
Livelihoods and Ecosystems in Mountainous Regions" (see Tentative Program
attached) to be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 7-9 March 2006. We expect
between 150 and 200 participants at this event. While the papers for the
contributed sessions have already been selected by the Program Committee, we
plan to organize a Special Session entitled "20 years after Khon Kaen - Has
the PRA and 'farmer first' movement benefited the poor in upland areas?"
This session is convened by a team of researchers involved in a project on
"Potential and constraints of participatory research approaches" under the
umbrella of The Uplands Program. A Call for Contributions to the session is
attached to this e-mail. We welcome contributions that present well
substantiated success stories and those that provide a critical view of the
potential, pitfalls and prospects of participatory approaches.

Please note that the organizers are not able to provide funding towards the
travel costs, accommodation and per diems of participants. Each contributor
to this special session is also kindly asked to send the completed
registration form to the symposium secretariat by 31 December 2005 to be
eligible to the early-bird registration fee.

We would be grateful if you could distribute the Call for Contributions
within your networks. We are looking forward to receiving your expressions
of interest and contributions in due course.

With best regards,

Andreas Neef, Rupert Friederichsen, Dieter Neubert and Franz Heidhues
