Aims and Scope
The main goal of this multi-disciplinary conference is to bridge the fields
of computer science, biology (from environmental sciences to genomics),
mathematics, physics, chemistry by bringing together involved scientists
from all over the world. This should enhance and facilitate contacts and
dialogs between the different specialists of Life Sciences.
Since 10 years the life science Modeling took benefits from recent (and less
recent) techniques of computer science : Oriented-Objects Languages,
Discrete Event Simulation, Neural networks, Markov Chains, Concepts of
Agents and Actors, Finite Elements, Fuzzy Logic, UML, GIS interface,
Web-based simulation, Parallel and distributed simulation, Web-Services and
Grid computing for Life Science...
Papers reporting on cutting-edge research in all areas of Life Science
simulation and Modeling in the broad sense are welcome (application /
methodology papers). All Retained papers will be presented in a 25 minutes
talk. In addition to ISBN proceedings.
A special issue of the SCI indexed SIMULATION journal (Transactions of the
Society for Modeling and Simulation International) will publish the best
papers in 2005. Of course the conference papers invited to the special issue
will need to be extended and reviewed to meet a regular paper standard.
ELSSC 2004 is an open conference with a wide International program committee
covering the major topics of Life Science simulation. As for instance a
large list of topics is indicated : Ecological Modeling, Environmental
models, management and assessment, Climate Change Modeling and simulation,
Waste management, Landscape management, Environnemental database management,
Quality management, Catchment management, Sustainability, Computational
Biology, Modeling of physical, biophysical and Chemical Modeling,
Bioinformatics (modeling and simulation for : Transcriptome, Proteome,
Metabolome, Interactome...), DNA Chips and Microarrays Modeling
applications, Modeling and Simulation of Biological Regulatory processes,
Ecosystem dynamics, vegetation dynamics Terrestrial and oceanographic
ecology, Population dynamics Diseases & epidemics, changes in biodiversity,
genome, predator-prey relationships, fishing...), Population behaviour,
Policy and decision aid models, Ethology and Individ!
ual behaviour, Hydrological Modeling, Air pollution Modeling, Applications
of Agent Based simulation to Life Sciences and social sciences,
Socio-Economic and environmental Modeling, Water management...

Special Session : Social Simulation
Session Chair: Frederic Amblard (Cemagref-LISC)
mailto:frederic.amblard@cemagref.fr
The use of modeling and simulation to help with the exploration and
understanding of social and economic issues is spreading wider and wider
among the social sciences. Social simulation as an interdisciplinary
research area deals with problems that benefits to both communities. It
benefits to computer scientists by bringing new problems to challenge,
dealing with complex adaptive systems that may imply new methods, tools or
techniques to be developed. But it benefits also to social scientists by
bringing a new support to sustain a new point of view on the social systems
to understand them. This session will be the opportunity for both
communities to present their work in an interdisciplinary atmosphere and
have fruitful interactions.
