INTERNATIONAL LIVESTOCK RESEARCH INSTITUTE

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

ScIENTIST - ECOSYSTEM MODELLER

Ref: ESM/05/01

General: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is a
non-profit international research organisation, serving a global mandate
to
improve productivity of small-holder livestock systems and to protect
the
natural resources that support these systems. ILRI has staff and
research
activities in Latin America, Asia and Africa. ILRI's principal research
facilities are located in Kenya and Ethiopia and its headquarters are
based
in Nairobi, Kenya. ILRI is one of the 16 research centres supported by
the
Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), which
comprises over 55 member countries, international organisations and
foundations. The co-sponsors for the CGIAR are the World Bank, the Food
and
Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
 
The position: A co-leader sought for an active ecosystem research team
focused on understanding the structure and function of ecosystems in
pastoral and crop-livestock systems across the developing world.
Candidate
will lead research on modeling management and policy alternatives for
pastoral-wildlife ecosystems; nutrient cycling in agro-ecosystems, and
modeling the effects of land-use and climate change on livestock
ecosystems.

Location: The successful candidate will be based at ILRI's Nairobi
campus.

Qualifications and experience: The incumbent will have a Ph.D. in
ecology
(or related discipline) and up to 10 years post-Ph.D. experience.
Experience in creating simulation or Bayesian system models using
spatial
data required. Experience with GIS and remote sensing data, statistical
modeling and decision support systems strongly preferred. Experience
with
livestock systems, agent-based modeling, and distinguishing human and
climatic impacts on tropical ecosystems desired.

Terms of appointment: Initial appointment is for two years with the
possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the
availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive remuneration package
including salary based on experience and paid in US dollars.
