Apologies for any duplicate emails, but here is some information about
the Agent-based simulation workshop in Portugal.

Agent-Based Simulation 5

Centro de Ciências da Complexidade
organizes
the 5th International Workshop on Agent-Based Simulation

Lisboa, Portugal

May 3-5, 2004

Workshop topics

Research in the domain of multi-agent systems (MAS) is becoming more
and more important because of the capacity of MAS to design and
simulate complex systems, i.e. systems composed of many entities in
interaction between themselves and with an external environment. MAS
are used in many domains in which classical mathematical models are not
available because either the dynamics are far from equilibrium, or the
systems are open (creation and deletion of entities in the course of
simulation), or emergent phenomena have to be explored, or the entities
are heterogeneous (for example, the eco-socio-systems which combine
ecological and social dynamics), or simply because they provide a more
intuitive understanding. The workshop is intended to offer a forum for
people interested in agent-based simulation to discuss methodologies,
techniques and applications.

We encourage contributions which present not only case studies but also
critical analysis on the pertinence of multi-agent models and their
usefulness for understanding or for decision making, design and
validation methodologies, comparative studies in the modelling
sciences. In particular, the subjects include but are not limited to:
• Design, implementation and validation methodologies, including
participative protocols;
• Modelling languages and platforms;
• Agent architecture for simulation;
• Interaction protocols including with humans;
• Multi-level simulation and emergence of global phenomena (including
norms and institutions);
• Time and space representation including multiple scales;
• Comparison with centralized models, relationship between
individual-based versus aggregative models;
• Conceptual and epistemological analysis.
The application domains include but are not limited to:
• Ecology and environment;
• Psychology and cognitive science;
• Social simulation;
• Economical models;
• Industry, manufacturing and logistics;
• Robotics;
• Virtual reality.

Lisboa

Lisboa is the capital of Portugal and lies on the north bank of the
Tagus Estuary, on the European Atlantic coast. It is the westernmost
city in continental Europe. Greater Lisboa has an area of approximately
1,000 km2. The city lies more or less in the centre of the country,
approximately 300 km from the Algarve in the south and 400 km from the
northern border with Spain. Lisboa offers a wide variety of options to
the visitor, including beaches, countryside, mountains and areas of
historical interest only a few kilometres away from the city centre.
Due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisboa has a pleasant
climate througho ut the year. The agreeable temperatures in the summer
months are an open invitation for a walk by the river, or to spend an
afternoon in one of the many street cafés to be found all over the
city. Although the temperatures may fall somewhat in the autumn and
winter months, sunshine is almost always a constant feature.
Approximately 600,000 people live in Lisboa. However, if one includes
the various satellite towns, the population of
Greater Lisboa rises to approximately 1.9 million people.
