| A one-year graduate research assistantship position is available at George
| Mason University for the 2003-2004 academic year. The position includes
| tuition waivers for up to 12 credits (6 per semester) and a stipend
| ranging from $9,200 to $10,860, depending on prior
| experience. Continuation of funding beyond 2003-2004 will be dependent
| on the availability of research funds. Candidates should posses a subset
| of skills in the following areas:
|
| - Geographic information systems applications.
| - Locating and compiling geographic data sources, especially
| socioeconomic
| data.
| - Object-oriented programming, especially Java.
| - Agent-based modeling.
| - Searching for and reviewing academic literature in geography, regional
| science, and economics, including bibliographic database management.
| - Spatial and a-spatial statistical analysis.
|
| Candidates should also ideally have some interest in:
| - Agent-based simulation models and computational social science.
| - Land-use modeling.
| - Issues related to urban land use patterns and land-use conversion at
| the urban/rural fringe.
| - Modeling environmental impacts of land-use change.
| - Spatial economics/economic geography.
|
| George Mason University offers a Masters of Science program in geography
| and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Policy. A Ph.D. concentration in
| computational social science is also under development through the Center
| for Social Complexity, and a two-semester introductory graduate sequence
| is currently offered. In addition, related graduate programs are available
| in the schools of public policy, information technology and engineering,
