INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP

CONNECTIVITY AND CONTINUITY (DIS-CONNECTIVITY AND DIS-CONTINUITY) OF CULTURAL LANDSCAPE DEVELOPMENT CASTLE NOVÉ HRADY SEPTEMBER 6. - 9. , 2002

Institute of Landscape Ecology Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and
Czech Association of Landscape Ecology
Aims of the workshop:
The concept of landscape connectivity in Landscape ecology means obviously how all elements composing the system of landscape are linked together. This
either/or qualitative concept is applicable for research of landscape mosaics as well as animals behaviour. Functional connectivity refers to how is the area connected
for processes.

Our methodological aim is to apply this concept on the social and cultural processes, i. e. social and cultural continuity or discontinuity of the holistic landscape. Our
raw hypothesis could be formulated as: landscape within continuity (continual process of development) should have a more linkages (relationships) among social,
cultural and natural patterns and features than landscape with great continuity disturbances. Are there some significant influences related to connectivity and continuity
in landscape system? Are there some representative landscape patterns and functions in terms of connectivity and continuity - dis-connectivity and discontinuity?

Practical aim is to attract not only scholars, but also students and people who are interested in landscape as well as people who are dealing with landscape
(stakeholders, decision-makers etc). That is the reason why we organize rather “landscape studies” (a combination of lectures with thematically focused excursion
and field research) than common conference or workshop.

Organization:
Workshop duration will be about 3 days. Planned term is from September 6 to September 9 2002. The maximum number of participants is 50 persons. We can
offer the accommodation in monastery of St. Peter and Paul or in the student’s hostel right in the Castle. Public catering will be available in monastery of St. Peter
and Paul.
The workshop will be attached with rich social program - bonfire, reception, landscape trips and sightseeing tours. The special part of the workshop will be two
exhibitions related to the history and present of borderland, the names of these exhibitions are: Men in landscape, landscape in men by Petr Mikąíček and Forgotten
weekday (this exhibition is a result of cooperation of NGOs in Česká Kanada and Austrian region Waldviertel).
This international workshop will be divided into academic and public sections. The public section will be represented by local authorities, students, NGOs
representatives etc. The conclusions of the academic section and results of public discussions could be used in public section during the field trips right in the region.
The sections could not be understand as isolated parts of the workshop. We suppose that both sections will be opened to allow communication between them,
influence and enrich each other. The “academic” section will represent professional point of view, the public section should show the perception of cultural landscape
development in the society.
The important part of the workshop will be excursion (similar to “field research”) - the participants will take photographs using digital camera to take a picture of
what they like and what they dislike in landscape. One pair of photos will be related to Czech region Novohradsko and second pair to Austrian region Waldviertel.
The photos gained from excursion will be presented and commented during the discussion. The commentary should include the answer to the question why do they
choose just this pattern and possible solution of recent situation. The official workshop speech will be English.

Outcomes:
All outcomes could encourage the seeking for a new types of connectivity and continuity, may be in old landscape patterns. Of course, the landscape system does
not respect political boundaries. That is the reason why we plan to visit surroundings of Nové Hrady as so as Austrian Waldviertel region during our field trips. We
want to demonstrate different levels of the connectivity and continuity of cultural landscape development in concrete images of landscapes.
The better understanding of connectivity and continuity - dis-connectivity and dis-continuity from interdisciplinary point of view could help us in the development of
good practice in the sustainable management of landscape. There should be also remarkable educational outcome from this workshop: knowledges could be
immediately evaluated during the practice of landscape studies and the rich discussion.

Workshop venue
The symposium will be held at Nové Hrady – close to the border with Austria. The venue is a Empire style chateau from the beginning of the 19th century, formerly
the home of the Count Buquoy, now it is in the ownership of the Czech Academy of Science. Proposed Centre for European Landscape Studies might be
