EXYSTENCE THEMATIC INSTITUTE: call for applications

The European Communities are proposing to finance the activities of the Complex Systems Network of Excellence
(EXYSTENCE). The purpose of EXYSTENCE is to develop collaboration among European research scientists
interested in Complex Systems from fundamental concepts to applications, and involving academia, business and industry.

The Network will not start earlier than April 2002, but advance notice is being given here to one of its first major activities: a Thematic Institute. The network will have a web site at <http://www.complexityscience.org/>.

Thematic Institutes are among several practical efforts to foster collaborations. The idea is to have a number of invited scientists (15-25) working together for extended (and possibly recurrent) periods of time, e.g. month(s) at the same location.
The inspiration for such an arrangement come from other institutions such as the Santa Fe Institute, Princeton (and Jerusalem) Institutes for Advanced Studies, Aspen Center for physics, the Newton Institute and the Emile Borel center in Europe.

The first institute will be held during May 2002 in Trieste (ICTP http://www.ictp.trieste.it/). The general theme will be complex systems, although we will try to partially focus certain periods on more specific themes through largely self-organising
processes. A few topical workshops will also take place at these institutions.

In the case of the first institute in Trieste we will focus on networks, dynamics, sociophysics and economics. During the institute,
WEHIA WORKSHOP ON ECONOMICS AND HETEROGENEOUS INTERACTING AGENTS (30 May - 1 June) Organized by M. Gallegati, A. Kirman and M. Marsili will take place.

The present situation is that the we don't yet have a formal notification of our budget from the European Communities: the present call for application is still tentative, but the short delay before the start of the institute makes this preliminary call indispensible.

Schedule:
- Please apply before March 4th.
- Notification of acceptance by March 15th.
- Dates of the TI May 6th - June 1rst.

Conditions of participation
Participants to thematic institutes have to stay in residence for a minimum three weeks continuous period (including 3 Mondays and 3 Fridays) but longer periods are welcome.
The invitation includes:
- local and travel expenses.
Local: boarding expenses. Travel: cheapest flights with a highest limit of 500 euros.
- Office space and full computer access.
