Research Fellowship in the
DISTRIBUTED SIMULATION OF AGENT-BASED SYSTEMS

School of Computer Science
University of Birmingham, UK

Applications are invited for a Research Fellowship (postdoc) in the
School
of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham for research in the
area
of the 'Distributed Simulation of Agent-Based Systems'.

The post is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research
Council as part of project number GR/R45338/01 for three years and is
available immediately . The starting salary will be up to 18,731 pounds,

depending on qualifications and experience. Applicants should have, or
be
about to complete a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related
discipline
and ideally will have a strong background in one or more of the
following
areas: parallel/distributed systems, parallel discrete event simulation
and
intelligent agents.

The project will be undertaken jointly with the School of Computer
Science
and Information Technology at the University of Nottingham, and will be
coordinated by Dr Georgios Theodoropoulos (Birmingham) and Dr Brian
Logan
(Nottingham). The project also funds a PhD studentship (Nottingham). The

Research Fellow will be based in the "Modelling and Analysis of Systems"

group at the University of Birmingham.

Closing date: 3 January 2002. For informal enquiries please contact Dr
Georgios Theodoropoulos (tel.: +44 121 414 4780, email:
gkt@cs.bham.ac.uk).
Application forms and further particulars can be obtained from the
Director
of Personnel Services, The University of Birmingham, Edgbaston,
Birmingham
B15 2TT UK, (tel.: +44 121 414 6486, email: h.h.luong@bham.ac.uk or web:

Project Summary
------------------------

The aim of this project is to apply and extend existing distributed
simulation algorithms and techniques to allow the simulation of
large-scale
agent-based systems consisting of hundreds or thousands of agents (e.g.,

battlefield simulation, ecological modelling and artificial life, and
computer entertainment and games). The project will focus on the
treatment
of the agents' environment, and in particular, ways of efficiently
decomposing the shared state to allow both the agents and their
environment
to be distributed across multiple processors. This decomposition must be

continuously updated as the pattern of interaction between the agents
and
their environment changes to ensure that the load remains balanced and
performance is not degraded. This is a challenging problem which calls
for
new approaches to issues such as optimisation, dynamic load balancing,
synchronisation and interest management. A more detailed description of
the
project including pointers to publications and the full project proposal
