SMC - Ume=E5 University announces Post Doc. positions

Spatial Modelling Centre (SMC) was established in 1997 as part of Milj=F6
och Rymdinstitutet (MRI). SMC was to develop an individual-based model
of Swedish demography, the SVERIGE model. SMC is now an outpost of Ume=E5
University in Kiruna. We specialise in the study of cultural
ecodynamics, the new inter-disciplinary science formed to allow us to
understand the connections between the social and natural sciences.
Cultural ecodynamics is the study of human actions and belief-systems as
environmental agencies and the impact of environmental changes on human
systems.

The SVERIGE model developed by SMC, consists of a set of program objects
or modules linked to a Micro Simulation Machine engine (MSM). SVERIGE
simulates the demographic and economic behaviour of the Swedish
population representing each person by a distinct computer program.
SVERIGE is undoubtedly the most powerful model of its kind now
available. However, we at SMC are already planning MSMs replacement by
developing an even faster prototype event-driven simulation engine.

The Centre for Longitudinal Individual and Environmental Information
(CELIM) is being established as a project within the framework of SMC.
CELIM is to create and supply a new, unique longitudinal
database-register, including abundant information of the population of
Sweden during the 20th century. For the first time ever the possibility
of re-creating a longitudinal database from governmentally produced
index-data is being exploited. There are considerable advantages in
having the possibility to work with individual life-histories on the
scales of a whole population. Even the small effects of life history and
environment on health and personal well-being can be can be
investigated.

We are pleased to announce the creation of a number of Post Doctoral
positions for individuals interested in joining our continuing research
programmes. Exceptional PhD candidates may also be considered.

Most of SMC:s work is based on interdisciplinary research. We welcome
applicants with suitable qualifications in economics, sociology,
statistics, demography, epidemiology, geography, mathematics and
modelling, policy relevant science and cultural and natural resource
management.

Successful candidates will be flexible, creative and able to adapt
easily to new situations. Since we are working in an international
research environment it is necessary that you be fluent in English.

Would you like to become part of our continued research development?
