The ability to adequately capture the elements and intricacies of
complex organizations is challenging. In the last years important
advances have been made in the area of agent-based social simulation
(ABSS). ABSS provides an explicit representation of actors in a social
or organizational domain as agents that have complex mental properties
and modes of interaction. The use of agent based models and simulation
to formally capture and understand organizations has already yielded
positive results and promises further tremendous potential.
On the other hand, people in the field of MAS look at naturally
occurring organizations, as a means to structure MAS. Agent
organizations can be understood as complex entities where a multitude of
agents interact, within a structured environment aiming at some global
purpose. The view of coordination and control has to be expanded to
consider not only an agent-centric perspective but mostly take a
societal and organization-centric focus. Agent organizations demand the
integration of organizational, intermediate level and individual
perspectives, the dynamic adaptation of models to organizational and
environmental changes, and rely for a great extent on the notion of
openness and heterogeneity of MAS.
By bringing together different communities such as agent organization
modeling, ABSS, computational organizational simulation, social
simulation and cognitive science, this workshop aims at discussing the
intersections of the different topics, cross fertilization and sharing
of experiences and as such extending the overall research on
organizations. The outcome of this cross fertilization should be
realistic, formal multi-agent organization models and corresponding
simulations. MAS design languages can provide structures for developing
organizational models, but will also provide insight on how natural
organizations may be augmented or enhanced. The tools needed for
modeling, simulating organizations and work practices and developing
intelligent agent systems will provide new insights into organization
theory.

•Application of organizational theory to MAS
•Modeling multi-agent organizations
•Social aspects of MAS
•Organization design, monitoring, and adaptation
•Languages and tools for simulation of agent organizations
•Dynamic, adaptive and emergent organizational structures and dynamics
•Communication and interaction in agent organizations
•Scaling and control issues in agent organizations
•Simulation, analysis and verification of dynamics of multi-agent
organizations
•Practical implementations of agent organization simulation
•Usable formalisations of organizational concepts

•September 25, 2006: deadline for Submission of contributions to workshops
•October 23, 2006: Workshop paper acceptance notification
•January 6-8, 2007: IJCAI-07 Workshops
Preparation and submission of papers
Please follow the template specified by Springer for the Lecture Notes
in Computer Science series
(http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html). The length of each
paper including figures and references must not exceed 12 pages. All
papers must be submitted in PDF format to Virginia Dignum
(virginia@cs.uu.nl)
Submission of a paper signifies that, upon acceptance, at least one of
the authors will register and attend the workshop to present the work.
More details on registration will appear in due time in the IJCAI-07
webpage (http://www.ijcai-07.org/).
Proceedings will be available at the workshop. It is planned to publish
revised and extended versions of the papers as a Springer LNCS volume
(pending confirmation).
